What does a website cost?

$150 to $500, paid once. One page sits near the bottom of that, several pages nearer the top. You get the exact number in writing after a free chat, before you agree to anything.

Looking after it afterwards is $29 or $59 a month, and it is optional.

It costs that little because I work alone, out of my own place, with no office and no sales team, and because the drafting is fast. The care is not the part I cut.

How long does it take?

One to two weeks for most small sites. The clock is usually not on me. It is on the handful of things only you can tell me: your prices, your hours, your photos, the name you actually trade under. Your private page lists exactly what is still missing, so you always know what is holding it up.

Why not just build it myself on one of those website builders?

You can, and for some people it is the right answer. But the dragging and dropping is the easy part.

The hard part is deciding what the page should say, writing it so a stranger hires you, getting photos that do not look like a phone snap of a wall, making it read properly on a phone, and testing that the form actually lands in your email. That part eats your Sundays for a month, and it is the part I do.

If you would rather do it yourself and just want somebody to check it, say so. I will tell you honestly whether it is worth paying me at all.

Do I own it?

Yes. The site is yours: the pages, the pictures, the words, the files. Your web address is registered in your name, not mine. If you stop paying me, you keep all of it. You never have to rent anything from me. If you take no monthly plan, your site lives wherever you choose to keep it, and I help you set that up when I hand it over.

What if you disappear?

A fair question to ask a one-person shop.

Your web address is in your name, so nobody can hold it hostage. The files are yours, and I will hand them to any builder you send to me. Nothing about your site is locked to me. It is ordinary web pages, and any competent person can pick them up.

If I ever stop doing this, you hear it from me first, with your files attached.

Can I update it myself?

Two answers, and both are fine.

Small things, like a price, your hours, or a new photo, you ask for on your own private page and I do them. Up to two a month on the $29 plan. Up to an hour a month on the $59 plan.

And if you would rather do it yourself, say so at the start. I will build the parts you want to change so that you can change them, and show you how. Some people want that. Most people would rather send me a message and get on with their day.

What about the website and web address I already have?

Your web address stays yours and keeps working. We point it at the new site, so nobody has to learn a new address. If you do not have one yet, I will help you get one: about $15 a year, registered in your name, not mine, and I add nothing to the price.

As for the site itself, there are three roads. If it is basically sound and broken in places, I repair it, and that is usually cheaper than starting again. If it is old and fighting you, I build a new one. If you are not sure which, send me the address and I will tell you which one I would do, and why.

When do I pay?

You pay when the site is finished and you have approved it. Not before. No deposit. If you walk away before it goes live, you owe me nothing.

Will you write the words for me?

I will draft them, and then you will fix them, because you know what your customers actually ask you. What I will not do is invent facts about your business. If I do not know your hours, the page waits until you tell me.
